John Bovio (1963- ) Untitled, oil pastel on wood panel, 30.5 x 37 inches, 1996.
John R. Bovio was born in Ithaca, New York in 1963, a direct descendant of philosopher and playwright Giovanni Bovio. While studying art at the Chicago Art Institute, Bovio was extradited to Sweden and served a prison sentence there, in a drug smuggling case. In 1994, Bovio moved to San Francisco where he started making and selling art out of his Valencia Street studio space which he called HEAD Gallery. He created hundreds of colorful works (using mostly primary colors) and used recycled and found wood, working in oils and acrylics.
Bovio remained active in the Mission District art scene into the 2000s. He had exhibitions at Adobe Bookshop, Facility 3, and San Francisco City Hall.
