Rene Pinchuk was born in Switzerland in 1929 and emigrated to the United States in 1940. He studied in the art department of Cass Technical High School in Detroit where he learned art techniques. Notably, he thereafter attended (now famous) Black Mountain College’s 3rd Summer Art Institute in North Carolina in 1946. The faculty at Black Mountain that Summer included Josef Albers, Anni Albers, Francisca Mayer, Mary Gregory, Will Burtin, Leonard Lionni, Concetta Scaravaglione, Jacob Lawrence, Leo Amino, Balcomb Greene, Jean Varda, and Beaumont Newhall. Fellow students at Black Mountain included Raymond Johnson, Ruth Asawa, Joseph Fiore, Harry Seidler, and Oli Sihvonen. Later, Pinchuk studied industrial and commercial design at the Art School of the Detroit Society of Art and Crafts (now the College of Creative Studies).

Pinchuk received a BA in Humanities from Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan) and an MA in Design (drawing & painting) from University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), both in 1951, and an MA equivalent in Oriental Arts from the University of Rome (Italy) in 1957. He also attended the Academy of Fine Arts (Florence, Italy) in the late 1940s.

Pinchuk worked most of his life as an industrial and graphic designer. An avid fencer of over six decades, he has competed in national fencing championships. He designed and built a house in Kensington, California where he still resides.

Pinchuk has exhibited widely, including at Gump’s (San Francisco), Maxwell’s (San Francisco), Bognar Gallery (Los Angeles), Denver Art Museum (Colorado), University of Michigan Artists Show (Ann Arbor), Gallery 4 (Detroit), Anna Werbe Gallery (Detroit), Florence Academy of Art (Italy). His work is part of the permanent collection in the Asheville Art Museum, North Carolina (in the Black Mountain College Collection).
